i've fallen in love with acne's pop classics s/s 2010 lookbook - affordable. i don't know whether to consider spring lookbooks depressing or exciting right now - it's barely winter and the thought of snow for the next 4-5 months is making me sick but on the flip-side i want it to be spring more than anything so that school will be finished, summer will be upon us, and all things will be bright again... therefore the s/s 2010 lookbooks are the gleem of hope i've been needing as of late.

Now for my 2 favourites from the main s/s 2010 collection lookbook. i couldn't resist (it's much less spring-y than the pop classics) that relates to price also.

Now that my midterms are finally over i can stop posting lazy blogs. More importantly i can give my full attention to the 140Fashion website development (which i assure you is making good progress!) My to-do lists are shrinking which is miraculous because technically study time has merely been replaced with sleeping, watching tv, and wasting hours on the internet - oh. and i got photoshop last week so a lot of time has been devoted to that as well. I stayed in tonight (halloween) because i've been sick for 2 weeks now and need to get better - i finished writing a paper that's due on thursday and 'watched' football with ben (searched the internet for my favourite black dresses) - here they are:

Bridging the Gap

While i was in that awkward "do i shop at Gap Kids or The Gap" phase that i'm sure you all went through, i chose to wear the size 14-slim jeans (with waist adjustment elastics) because no matter how awful they were they were better than buying the same jeans as my grandmother. Gap was all over the place - for years when i pictured GAP a imagined a multi-generation focus group eating granola and talking about slacks - effed. But that's what i always saw in the stores - a modern "mom jean", a pattern of the season (so that the whole family could co-ordinate), and lame, overpriced accessories.........

I recently visited Gap and was pleasntly surprised. I bought LOTS - even my deadhead boyfriend (who in the past 3 years i have never seen buy new clothing) bought LOTS...
And so i looked into it - and my thanks go out to Patrick Robinson (@Patrick_at_Gap), the man behind the brand reinvention... the man who may or may not have told the Gap that in order for their clothing to sell they should probably narrow in on a more close knit target demographic than one that includes the ages of me AND my grandma.

Case in point, my congrats go out to The GAP (@GapOffical) for finally hitting the basics bang-on.... and might i add that they've got quite the ad campaign going for their 1969 Premium Jeans (check out the facebook link here). All up in the social media frenzy - so basic, so BRILLIANT - no more commercials because only grandma's watch live TV anyway! AND the best part: the $50-$70 price tag on all the jeans.

CONSIDER THE GAP BRIDGED.

I have finally returned from my summer in the woods with some of my questionably fashionable friends - the pictures below prove my point.

Some important items in my summer at camp wardrobe were my millions of soffe shorts in every colour imaginable worn high waist-ed with any top i could find. there were very few instances in which my denim button down was not thrown on top and for spf protection a vintage purple adidas (i just had to say 'all day i dream about sports/sex' in my head in order to spell that correctly) cap usually worn backwards. in other words i looked like a 10 year old dork on a daily basis but i can't even pretend i didn't love every second. Anyway. i'm back in the city now and cant wait dig back into the fashion world in real life, magazines, and on the internet. More importantly - i can't wait to devote myself completely to the launch of 140Fashion - i'll keep you posted.

Everyone is crazy about snake skin - it seems to be a trend that never truly fades. I have plently of rings/purses/necklaces ... check out the @RYCause website - even that is adorned with the beautiful snakeskin used below. I even had the pleasure of babysitting my roommates snake while he was away in Montreal for a weekend this year. Beauty.

The most incredible snake skin item i own is this over the shoulder purse (slash clutch). My grandmother gave it to me a while ago and i save it for special occasions... it's way to beautiful and soft to over wear. I want to have it forever.

Now that my internship @stocktwits is finished i've been working like crazy putting the finishing touches on the @140Fashion website and getting ready to launch - hopefully early next week (maybe tomorrow but i don't want to get your hopes up).

The Lisbon girls dress with a carefree style not unlike @Kirsten_Dunst's personal style. I've always been a fan since my favourite movie growing up was Little Women (i watched it on VHS all the time and by biggest concern was not the pending war but rather the character that played grown up Amy - she was no Dunst) When i found this Dunst edition of @Lulamagazine i went mad. combat chicks

By now, we've all caught on to the Dr. Marten trend. But for me, it was always the outsider characters in books who were man enough to wear them (i say man enough because often the characters were trying to avoid the feminine stereotype) Anyway, there has been a recent rise in the combat boot where we're seeing girls in lace socks and ruffle dresses pull them off with ease. I love the look but unfortunately i have been looking for a vintage pair for months with no luck - i think it's much more authentic then buying a shiny new pair. I saw these boots the other day @UrbanOutfitters - they are made to look vintage, and i like that they can be folded down - but let's face it, they aren't necessarily 'combat'

I decided to check out the doc marten website and found this wide aray of colours. What do you think? The short boots sell for around $110 and the tall for around $120.

I don't know that I'm sold on the brights and patterned boots. For over $100 dollars i know that i would never get enough wear out of them. I love the mettalics though!! They are definitely played down - which i like... suttleness makes them work with any outfit over and over again. As for the skeleton boots - I had to include them. How many of you now know how next years halloween costume is going to be complete!?

I discovered Nadinoo a few weeks ago and i haven't shut up about it since. I am absolutely IN LOVE with the line... so after sitting at my computer drooling over the clothing for long enough i decided to email the designer/blogger, Nadia, to see if she would let me interview her for the 140Fashion blog. Here it is - hopefully this will be the first of many interviews! The questions are pretty cookie cutter but they definitely cover the basics. Hopefully with experience will come creativity... enjoy.

How did you decide to choose fashion as your career? To be honest I have no idea, I guess it was already chosen for me.. I have always loved clothes and felt inspired by them, choosing to study fashion just felt very natural. I have to say I'm glad I did now, as I really enjoy what I do and can’t imagine doing anything else.

Your big break – was it one of those right place right time moments? Did you see it coming? Did happen sooner than you thought? I think I am still waiting for my big break, starting up on my own was a big risk as I left my comfy job designing for Puma. I only started to set up my Nadinoo label in February of this year so it is still too early to tell if I will make it. But I am very proud of what I have achieved in the last three months and feel very confident about the future.

Did you study fashion in school? I studied Fashion Design and Technology at Manchester Metropolitan University, it was a four-year course, which was incredibly hard work. I would love to go back to university and do a masters, perhaps at the Royal collage of Fashion or Saint Martins in London.

Inspiration? I suppose I am incredibly inspired by vintage eras, I never like to pin point one era though. I just take all the best bits I like and make them wearable today. I have never been hugely conceptual either, I prefer to work with the fabrics and silhouettes and then I feel the mood is produced from there.

Help from friends/family/important people? I have an amazingly supportive boyfriend, he is a graphic designer and has worked in the apparel industry for a lot longer than I have. It is so nice to talk through ideas with him and share opinions. I have a great deal to thank him for.

Describe your line in one sentence. Fun, feminine and perfect for flocking in a sunny field full of daisies…

Where can it be bought? I have my own independently run online shop. I also joined the Etsy community and have a little store on there too. I love Etsy, there is so much hand made talent on there!

Do you have any famous fans? Not yet but I would love to see Kirsten Dunst or Zooey Deschanel in my Nadinoo collection.

Any fashion pet peeves? Or any “rules” you like to ignore? Not really, I think people should wear what they feel good in. I only offer advice if asked, same as I would hate someone telling what I should wear. To hell with rules, fashion is meant to be fun!!

Favourite thing to wear? This summer I am loving my floral playsuit, I feel so precious in it! Sounds like I’m plugging my collection but I really could wear it in every colour.

Hobbies, interests? While I was working at Puma my hobby was sewing dresses, but as I do that now as a job I like to switch off by reading a good book or cooking a lovely tasty meal.

Favourite Designers? I love the See by Chloe collections, I think I could buy almost everything from there SS09 collection, also Cacharel, APC, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Paul & Joe Sister, the list goes on…

How long does it generally take to make an item (from design to finished product)? Depends on how complicated the design is but some days I can wake up in the morning with an idea and have the garment made by the evening and in my shop.

Where do you do your work? Home, studio, office, outside? I have my own studio on the top of our apartment, it is the perfect place to work as there is plenty of light and space and when it’s sunny I get to do my unpicking and pinning on the roof terrace.

Wendy Bevan almost caused me a heart attack

When I went to the Wendy Bevan website the other day to check for new photos my heart sunk - "this website is currently being updated" (updated was spelled 'upddated' which caused more heart pains). Anyway. I was really disappointed so i thought I would scrounge up some pictures and post them here for you guys to enjoy. I love her work because she isn't one of those flashy (no pun intended) photographers - read this interview - her photos are always so interesting, and the fashion is really unique. That first photo is my absolute favourite.

Karen Walker - of New Zealand

Not of Will and Grace.

New Zealand fashion designer Karen Walker (the only Karen Walker I could find on twitter was from Will and Grace - it seems only natural that a fictional character like her would gain a following on twitter) started her famous label with NZ$100 which she used to make one shirt. This was back in the early 90s. By 1995 she had two title stores and by 1995 her line was being sold at Barneys! What’s awesome about this international fashion legend is her celebrity following – Madonna, Sienna Miller, Liv Tyler, Claire Danes, Tyra Banks… so many more. View her collection here.

Sweet sweeden - because it's a place where acne is sweet

The Swedish design label ACNE (‘ambition to create novel expressions’) started as a creative consulting firm, but today is famous for their award-winning denim label (among other things). Co-founder Jonny Johnansson designed 100 pairs of jeans in raw denim with red stitching back in '97 and gave them to friends, family and clients with big hopes in mind. The simple, cool blue jeans soon caught the attention of the fashion press and buyers alike (mission accomplished). The full line was officially launched a year later and quickly became a cult hit in its native Stockholm (see similar on Net-a-Porter). Acne has evolved into a full label famous for its unique brand of laid back luxury. You can purchase the spring line on the link above and check out the fall collection HERE. I'm not one to spend that kind of money on jeans since i usually kick it in tights - it's cold where i live majority of the time and there is nothing i hate more then freezing jeans - they lead to stiff, freezing legs - and i prefer freezing legs (in my tights) over stiff AND freezing legs. I'm drooling over this biker jacket though (My half birthday is on July 22 for those of you that care)

Fairy Tale Fashion - Country Craze: Argentina

Buenos Aires' Nadine Zlotogora makes clothing that tells a story. Every piece in her Spring/Summer '09 line makes you feel like life is a fairytale. The line (like her past lines which can be seen HERE) is a testament to her playful hippy attitude but the price tags are a far cry from the penniless muse you dress to portray when you wear any of the organic pieces. That's because each very feminine garment is satin, macramé and/or embroidered, and then individually dyed to ensure its uniqueness. From what i understand this designer doesn't use twitter, but i really couldn't pass up up profiling her as a thanks to all my readers from Argentina!!

i love the floral bathing suit (naturally). The bow is also pretty awesome and if you can pull it off - all the power to ya. I will own the crop top in every colour as soon as it is available. I have several items like that belt pouch (a very useful accessory - fits phone, some cash, and a credit card perfectly and looks great with a baggy dress or high rise denim). THE SHEETS - thankfully i have a new bedroom at school waiting to be dressed and since i often wear my 50/50/25 shirts to sleep there can be nothing bad about @americanapparel bed linen! I wish the cutest boy i know would wear that rain jacket.... but i know he never would, and that's a shame. And the bag. it's great... but in an homage to my homeland i would like to give a shout out to @RootsCanada--if you don't live in Canada you've probably never heard of Roots so if you're in the market for a travel bag check out THIS weekend bag from @RootsCanada- you'll thank me when you buy it - and it is worth every penny, i have never gotten so much use from a bag... plus leather bags never go out of style and the nice thing about Roots leather is it only gets better with age! I have the weekend bag in black but i love the tribe leather i linked you to - i use the tribe leather backpack for school and it's a love affair... i highly recommend it.

60 Styles, 15 Original Prints (all ranging in price from $14.99-44.99 - excluding the leather Jacket which is $139.99) I am happily residing in Arizona this month (far away from my home-base in Toronto where the closest Target is 2 hours away and across a boarder) and can't wait to check out the collection this weekend - find it in Target stores from May 17th until June 27th - it'll be interesting to see and feel the fabrics in person, who knows if it'll be worth it but I'm definitely going to give it a try - I'll keep you posted.

Ever since I bought a beautiful floral cardigan at a costume store in small town Ontario, I've been mildly obsessed with all things flowery. So much so that I was actually excited when they became a trend - I was happy that my hunt for vintage floral became less stressful by the addition of mainstream floral at everyday stores. Of course I still hunt often as there is something about the vintage items that is much more fulfilling - however it's nice to know that floral is just a quick shopping trip away. In fact, my new favorite item for summer is the Floral Silence & Noise Zip Bustier that i picked up at Urban Outfitters the other day!

Country Craze - Global Fashion Dedications: Norway

It has only been two days since the 140Fashion blog launch and I am already happy to announce that the response has been amazing. I use Sitemeter to track the blogs views and in less than 48hours there have been over 200 (insane! THANK YOU!) Even more impressive is where those views are coming from. In thanks, I have decided that I'm going to look into some global fashion and make posts dedicated to my readers home countries. The first dedication is for Norway. Bik Bok is a Norwegian fashion retailer that sells clothing and accessories for women. I've tweeted about their SS 09 StyleBook before so you may have already seen some of these photos - regardless, the second look will only do you well. I love this photo shoot (okay, i know that it was shot in Miami, but it's the Norwegian home base that counts!) The only thing that hurts is that you can't order Bik Bok online, by mail order, or even by phone - so for those of us that live West of the Alantic we're shit outta luck.
